Work at What You Love
A Life-Changing Workshop for
People Who Want to Quit Their Jobs and Get a Life

April 11-12, 2008
Northampton, Massachusetts

Dear Change Seeker,

Imagine a job where you set your own hours. You get up when you want and walk across the hall to your office. You take time out to go for a run or meet a friend for lunch.

You don't waste entire days in meetings. You don't answer to an unreasonable boss. You take vacation when you feel like it, not when it's convenient for somebody else.

But best of all, you're excited by your work. You enjoy it. You're passionate about it. You're proud of it.

And you make a living doing it – on your own terms.

Sound too good to be true? Well that's how Melissa describes her life. She attended a workshop like this and today her life is very different. But I'll let her tell you in her own words:

Hi Valerie,

My husband and I attended the seminar in Northampton this past year. After the seminar I felt recharged. I made a decision to do one small thing toward making some kind of business for myself. Since then things have grown faster than I expected. I submitted a book proposal for a knitting technique and pattern book to Storey Publishing. The proposal was accepted, and I am wrapping up the manuscript this week.

I've had designs accepted for publication by two yarn manufacturers, and have continued to develop my design relationship with Webs/Valley Yarns, a retailer in Northampton that sells their own line of yarns along with those of other manufacturers. My work has been featured in their catalog, and my designs consistently perform well. I've had a logo designed and am building a webpage that eventually will sell my patterns retail and wholesale (www.MelissaKnits.com). I've even got a plan for a second book, and hope to begin on it as soon as the first one is put to bed.

My husband and I are still developing other revenue streams based on my knitting and design work! It's been an astonishing ride so far and I cannot wait to see where I go from here!

Thank you for the seminar experience!

Melissa Morgan-Oakes

Melissa says that the seminar gave her the confidence and support she needed to actively start turning her interests into viable income streams. "I believe it was the liberation and support of surrounding myself with people who were not willing to accept the word "can't" that helped me to push past the remaining limitations I was putting on my own development. When [the book publisher] asked if I could write a book between the end of October and the middle of February, I did not hesitate. I simply said ‘Yes.' and went forward."

Creative Ways to Make a Living

Follow your bliss... the number of creative ways you can make a living is endless...

And Melissa is just one example of somebody who learned that those small steps really do lead to living big dreams.

Take James and Cynthia. Both had lucrative jobs in Boston that required long hours and long drives. "We were corporate burnout zombies, "says James, "so preoccupied with our rote existence we simply didn't realize it." But when a client-relative absconded with much of their wealth, they lost virtually everything. Evicted from their home, they were forced to start over.

This time, they thought first about what they really wanted their lives to look like.

Today they together manage an upscale, seasonal Cape Cod resort. They live free-of-charge on the sea in a neighborhood of million-dollar homes left vacant by owners too busy to enjoy them. They have time for their young daughter. And for five months of the year, they are able to pursue their own unique interests, which include writing, silversmithing, lapidary, and rock sculpture.

We'll Teach You How to Come Up With
All Sorts of Creative Ways to Make a Living

One great benefit of doing what you love is that, very often, you can do it from anywhere… because the most important things you need are inside you.

Sure, such a project requires a certain amount of talent, personal experience, and passion. And you need a plan. But you can gather a lot of expertise simply from asking the right people the right questions. Don't let education – or lack thereof – stop you from dreaming big.

Consider the story of Jean Nidetch who started Weight Watchers. She wasn't a doctor or a nutritionist. She was just a woman who wanted to be thin. She designed a program for other people like her and turned it into a million-dollar business.

Just because it hasn't been done before, doesn't mean you can't do it. Take past seminar attendees Ron and Tina who are now traveling the country in their RV and getting paid to advise other people who want to live "off the grid" but still technologically plugged in. They've established themselves as "mobile lifestyle consultants" and in doing so are pioneering a job niche that didn't previous exist.

Since the workshop, Tina and Ron's "office with a view" vistas have included the towering peaks of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, the expansive vistas of Arizona's magnificent Sonoran Desert, and the turquoise waters of the Florida Keys.

"This workshop was one of the best investments
I ever made!"

I couldn't have gotten this far without the information and contacts I made at this conference. Barbara and Valerie... Thank you for your wonderful information and events.

Why Shouldn't You Have A Job
That Feeds Your Spirit?

You'd be amazed at the creative ways people embrace their passions and figure out a way to make a living at them. Consider…

… Stephanie who, at 50, quit her job and moved 300 miles back to her hometown to attend massage-therapy school. Today she's a licensed massage therapist on the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists and the proprietor of two successful office practices.

… Tom, a former Marine who these days makes his living as a reindeer rancher in Minnesota. He's living close to the land in a small community where people never lock their doors – enjoying exactly the quality of life that's important to him.

… Debbie, who calls her 25-year career as a marketing manager "a detour" and now pursues her lifelong passion as a professional gardener.

… Bob, a former school teacher who decided to turn his passions as an outdoorsman and a collector into his own unique dream job. Today he makes his living running snow mobile tours in Quebec in the winter and selling vintage car parts from his farm in rural Massachusetts in the summer.

... you get the idea. The point is: You CAN escape your life as you know it. You CAN create a whole new existence and make a living doing work that feeds your passions, that fits into your vision of what your ideal life looks like.

"I would strongly encourage anyone who is thinking
about striking out on their own to attend this workshop NOW - it was an incredibly worthwhile investment."

My decision to attend the Work at What You Love workshop has truly made a difference and has had a positive impact on my life. I am eternally grateful to Barbara and Valerie for sharing their knowledge, passion, support, expertise and enthusiasm - and for providing the access to a network of people who I can share this exciting journey with.

Many thanks and best wishes for the future,

Ready to Quit Your Job and Work at What You Love?
This Spring, Learn How We Did It…
and How You Can, Too.

Somewhere we've gotten to thinking that "fun" and "irresponsible" are synonymous. Not so! Enjoying your life is the most responsible thing you can do.

 Barbara Winter

Just think about it. Do you really believe, deep inside, that your life calling revolves around performance reviews or three-hour meetings where nothing gets done? Do you think you were put on this earth to spend your weekend running around trying to take care of all of the errands you didn't have time to do during the week?

I certainly don't.

That's why I'd like to invite you to join me for an extraordinary workshop called Work at What You Love designed especially for people who want to work how, when, and even where they want.

You'll come away from two intense and powerful days with a clear vision of what you'd like your ideal life to look like... and a toolbox of techniques for turning those ideas into income you can take to the bank.

I'll give you more details in just a moment. But first, let me introduce Barbara Winter (and myself) whom you'll meet this spring.

How to Turn Your Passions Into
Real-World Opportunities

Barbara Winter is the author of the bestselling book, Making a Living Without a Job: Winning Ways for Creating Work That You Love, and a self-employment advocate who found her own right livelihood after overcoming her early notions that work was meant to be drudgery.

Barbara's newest book, Jumpstart Your Entrepreneurial Spirit is a collection of essays designed to joyfully jolt you out of that mind numbing "9-to-5 grind mind" so you can start thinking like the inspired self-bosser you were meant to be.

A former high school English teacher, Barbara has turned her considerable energies to the teaching of adults. Her popular seminars, including "Making a Living Without a Job" and "Establish Yourself as an Expert," are regularly held throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Barbara's newsletter Winning Ways celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, making it the longest running small business newsletter in the country.

Throughout the workshop, Barbara will lend her considerable experience and talents to help you figure out how to best turn your passions into real-world opportunities that pay.

"Your workshop helped me discover that there are many ways to "make a living without a job."

I've been busy since the workshop! I'm delighted to report that I have followed my dream of teaching etiquette to children and adults... I'm writing a book about manners for children and I continue to teach etiquette classes at Ritz-Carlton resorts in Florida and at country clubs, schools, etc. I've even traveled across the country to teach to business etiquette to Fortune 500 companies. Thanks again to Valerie and Barbara!

Who Said You Have to Get All Your Money In One Place?

Discover How Multiple Streams of Income Can
Prove More Lucrative and Make You More Flexible

When we talk about our dreams we're told to
"get real." Well, if
"get real" means spending your entire adult life working at a job you hate, coming home too exhausted to do little more than plop yourself down in front of the television, then getting up the next day to do it all over again, well, maybe it's time to get "unreal."

 Valerie Young

You'll also hear from me. In case you don't know me, my name is Valerie Young, and I'm the Dreamer in Residence at Changing Course where I help people like you find their true calling... and transform their lives. In fact, in the last five years I've personally counseled over 400 people on how to turn their interests into income. Today I run a certification program to train coaches and other creative thinkers how to establish their own small businesses as creative career consultants.

I guess I, too, am what you'd call an "expert" at what I do. My advice has been cited in places like Kiplinger's, Inc. magazine, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today Weekend, Woman's Day, Glamour (UK), Redbook, Entrepreneur's Business Start Ups The Chicago Tribune, The Globe & Mail, The Sydney Morning Herald and elsewhere.

Then last year I started the Fast Track Your Dream Community to give members can tap into the information, resources, and support they need to accelerate their dream of working at what they love without a job-job. And I'm also the author of three books -- 10 Steps to Escaping the Job World and Creating the Life You Really Want, How to Feel as Bright and Capable as Everyone Seems to Think You Are and The Idea Jogger: 201 Totally Cool Ways to Make a Living Without a Job and the editor of Finding Your True Calling and Yes You Can: The Inspirational Kick in the Pants You Need to Take Control of Your Life and Go After What You Want.

But what I'm most proud of is the fact that twelve years ago, I abandoned my corporate cubicle and my 90-mile-a-day commute to launch Changing Course. And today I am doing work, and living a life, I love. My mission is to help you do the same.

You see, I firmly believe that you don't really need a job to make a living. You need money, sure. But there's no reason it must come from one place. Having several profit streams offers the same sorts of advantages diversifying your investments does. When one slows down, you can rely on the others.

This spring, I'll teach you not only five steps you need to know if you really want to escape the job world, but I'll also train you to be an "Opportunity Analyst." By the close of the workshop, you'll be able to spot potential profit streams virtually everywhere you look.

"Before the workshop, I was clueless on how I would translate what I love to do into a solid income."

The workshop really helped me to clarify what I wanted to focus on in order to make a living... It's amazing how everything seems to be connected and supporting the whole picture of who I am. I'm very excited and very happy.

And much, much more…

Past Participants Praise the Jump-Start
They Could Never Have Gotten on Their Own

This is our eighth event of this type. In the past we've held these workshops small venues like Ventura, California; Madison, Wisconsin; Kennebunkport, Maine and Boulder, Colorado. For the third year in a row, we're back by popular demand in the small, artsy city of Northampton, Massachusetts. And in all cases, the results were astounding.

Click Here for Lodging and Travel Information

One participant partnered with a friend to buy and sell fixer-uppers. Despite being discouraged by everyone, including their spouses, they sold their first house two weeks after it went on the market.

Another turned his love for kids, sports and coaching into a consulting practice coaching other coaches.

A third is well on her way to starting a non-profit to benefit orphans in South Africa. Plus, she's setting up a separate business to import beaded handicraft and create travel opportunities for others interested in visiting and possibly volunteering in this beautiful part of the world.

And still another quit his full-time job as a hotel manager to pursue his photography business full-time .

Participants came away not only focused on reinventing themselves, but motivated and armed with the kind of positive momentum that is nearly impossible to create when you're trying to tackle this kind of life-change on your own.

Learn From People Who Have Already "Done It"
and Are Living Their Dreams

This year's event promises to be even more powerful.

That's because you'll be hearing from, and working with, not only some of the industry's most highly acclaimed career-change experts, but because you'll also meet an extraordinary panel of guest speakers who will tell you in practical terms about how they followed their own dreams and developed them into viable businesses.

You'll have a chance to ask them questions and learn from "somebody who's been there" about the pitfalls to avoid, the secrets to success, and the strategies they've used to get ahead.

More than just a workshop, Work at What You Love is an extraordinary networking opportunity. In no other place will you find so many "insiders" ready to share with you their specialized wisdom.

These are the kinds of connections that would take you months – maybe years – to make on your own. But over two long days this spring, you'll have a chance to gather the critical insider knowledge you need to really catapult you from where you are today… to where you'd rather be.

Among the speakers we're working on bringing in are a panel of inspired entrepreneurs. These are people who used to be where you are but today are living their dreams. They'll tell you how they made the transition from having a boss to being a boss… and how you can to.

"Since the workshop I have launched two businesses!"

The workshop was great! I was knocked out by the panel of local entrepreneurs. I learned from them that dreams come true when you have purpose and vision and then ACT on them every day. It's not just for the other people, it's for me too.

Laid Back, Charming, and Culturally Rich…
The Ideal Spot to Start Reinventing Yourself

Though you'll be busy each day with the many workshop sessions for Work at What You Love, we've arranged the schedule so you'll still have a little time to enjoy a well-deserved escape from the fast pace of day-to-day life.

Because this program is as much about introspection as it is about taking action, we wanted the locations to complement our purpose – to help you slow down so you can take the time and space you need to "dream big."

You're on your own for meals during the program, so you'll have time to head into town and explore a bit and savor dozens of dining choices all within a few blocks of your workshop venue. Don't worry. You won't break the bank eating out. We made sure to select a location where you'll find truly great food for a wide range of tastes – and budgets.

Located in Western Massachusetts at the foothills of the Berkshires, Northampton boasts eclectic shops and restaurants so sophisticated they've been featured in the New York Times and Bon Appetit magazine. Northampton offers more than great food. You'll find museums, theaters with performers of New York City caliber, and art offerings so diverse and so prevalent that Northampton was dubbed the "Number One Best Small Arts Town in America" by author John Villani.

Venture outside Northampton's city lines and enjoy the country comforts. Browse in antique shops, country markets or artists' studios. Roar down the Connecticut on a raft. Pick apples or berries at one of the many farms or simply stop at a roadside stand and select from the harvest. Climb the many hills and mountains. It's the kind of place where you'll find yourself relaxing and reflecting. On slowing the pace of life. On beauty. On life. And that's exactly what you're meant to do…

"The Work at What You Love workshop,
 and the networking from it,
remains a part of my evolving journey."

I'm still happily out of corporate life, working with an entrepreneurial friend of mine in her new gelato business, as well as pursuing other personal goals. The event was fantastic all around! I met great people, learned great tools and had a fun time doing so, at a nice venue (Northampton is one of my favorite towns), for a reasonable price.

Come Away With a Roadmap to Success

We've structured this workshop so that you come away with what amounts to a roadmap for success, a plan of action that outlines what you need to do, step-by-step, to get from where you are today... to working at what you love.

Please understand, this workshop demands you roll up your sleeves, lean forward, and get involved.

You'll do some thinking on your own, certainly, but the exercises and conversations we'll guide you through will encourage you to expand your horizons and share your ideas so you're getting feedback from both your fellow participants and from the speakers.

Over the course of two full days you'll –

  • Explore the practical matter of turning those passions, hopes, and dreams into a livelihood. You'll come away understanding the dream-busting myths about self-employment you must absolutely ignore... the secrets to thinking like an entrepreneur... how to make a living without a job through the power of multiple income streams... and much more.

  • Tackle the roadblocks... what's keeping you stuck... and teach you how to navigate around them. You'll learn how to use the CLUE technique to generate fascinating business ideas… and open up an incredible range of positive possibilities and creative alternatives to having a job.

  • Find out if you fall into the "Expert Trap," the "Rugged Individualist Trap," the "Natural Genius Trap," or the "Perfectionist Trap"… and what to do to free yourself…

  • Find out what every expert knows. Learn how to create visibility for yourself... proven ways to package what you know... and how to get the media to promote your expertise, often without spending a dime...

  • Throw an idea party... and get a team of fun, creative people to help you brainstorm ideas about your wildest dreams.

  • Master the concept of "fearless marketing. "Too many great ideas never see the light of day because marketing fears overtake the owner of the idea. Forget what you've heard about assertive marketing and learn to attract your ideal customers and clients to you.

  • No doubt, you'll hit roadblocks on the route from where you are now to that new life you dream of. But we'll arm you with some effective, proven techniques for getting around them. Just remember: Information equals freedom. During Work at What You Love, we'll teach you how to harness the collective wisdom, experience, and insight all around you so you'll know exactly what to do when you find yourself "stuck."

And that's not all…

"The workshop set me on the path to my current life."

After attending the workshop, I was more aware of opportunities and choices. I thought about how I wanted my life to be like and concluded that I wanted different work, and to live on the ocean, in a more temperate climate.

We'll Give You Tools and Resources You Can Use
Long After the Workshop Is Over

You don't need any special qualifications to come to Work at What You Love. Just promise me you'll arrive with a mind open to ideas and possibilities you might never have thought of before... and an eagerness to start something new in your life.

We'll give you all the tools you need to make that happen. In fact, in addition to the hands-on work we'll do during the workshop, we'll make sure you're well-armed with materials that will keep you focused long after the seminar has ended.

When you join me, Barbara Winter, and our inspiring panelists at Work at What You Love, we'll give you not only pages and pages of helpful notes, exercises, articles, and resources you can refer to again and again, but also a collection of additional materials you'll find invaluable tools as you put your plan for change into action. You'll receive...

  • A copy of Barbara Winter's Inspiration, Love and Entrepreneurship CD

  • A complimentary issue of Barbara Winter's bi-monthly newsletter, Winning Ways

  • A special CD featuring Valerie Young and some of her "Dream Team" members

(These materials alone represent an extraordinary value. And some of them, quite frankly, you can't get anywhere else because we've developed them exclusively for this program.)

Ongoing Support...Well Beyond the
Last Workshop Session

There's something else that sets this workshop apart from other events of this sort: We won't just leave you to your own devices once the program is over. You'll have the option to sign up for weekly "get-togethers" by telephone as part of a group of fellow workshop attendees in a "Barbara Sher-inspired Success Team."

You'll get moral support, share ideas, and benefit from the confidence-boosting enthusiasm your team members will offer. Frankly, as part of a Success Team, the odds are much higher that you'll follow through on your dream...

"The workshop was excellent and the best part is
the on-going support from Barbara and Valerie
and our Coffee Coaches group!"

At the Work at What You Love workshop last June, three of us met and clicked and realized we live in the same area. Before we left, we exchanged contact info and made plans to meet to keep the momentum going. Well, we just had our twelfth meeting!

Think You'll Look Back on Your
Life With Satisfaction and Pride?

It would be impossible for you to gather on your own, in just a few short days, the wealth of knowledge, the excellent contacts, and the high-energy momentum for change that you'll gain at this workshop.

Day by Day Schedule

You'll come away with an attainable vision for your new life, a do-able plan for reinventing yourself, and all the tools and techniques you need to turn your ideas into income.

An investment of just a few days now... for a lifetime you can look back on with satisfaction and pride. Can you afford not to be there?

Think about it: People don't look back on their lives and wish they'd spent more time driving to work or heading to the office on Saturdays. As baby boomer expert Mike Bellah put it: "Temporary choices have a way of becoming permanent ones, and today's procrastinations become tomorrow's regrets."

Don't put your dreams off for another year. Join us this spring at Work at What You Love and learn how you can trade your job for a life you love… and banish those regrets forever.

Sign Up and Pay Just $299

Participants at the 2003 Boulder, Colorado retreat paid over $1200 to get in. The next year's attendees paid $597. Last year's participants paid as much as $400. But, with our special early bird discount, the registration fee for the Work at What You Love workshop is an incredibly low $249 per person when you sign up before March 15th.

That includes two full days of intensive, interactive class sessions geared to help you identify ways to make a living doing what you love and create a plan to make your dreams a reality.

How can we offer this amazing workshop for only $249? Simple. Barbara and I wanted to make sure that money would not be a barrier to attending. We also want it to be the biggest, most diverse party of dreamers and dream doers ever.

So we came up with the idea of a "no frills" seminar. Think Southwest airlines here. Cut out the extras - while still providing a top-notch experience - and pass the savings along to you, the consumer.

In the past we've spent upwards of $10,000 on elaborate meals, breaks, and give-aways. A simple mid-afternoon cookie break can run close to $2,000! So instead of "wining and dining" you, or spending money on fancy conference bags or commemorative mugs and fancy food breaks, we've shaved the cost of attending so that money isn't a barrier. Take the savings and invest them into your dreams and still attend an intensive, life-changing seminar guaranteed to jump start your new life.

You may have to bring your own cookie, but what you will get is the benefit from small group work and tons of advice and information from me and my friend and occasional partner in entrepreneur recruiting, Barbara Winter, author of Making a Living Without a Job. Plus (and this is one of my very favorite parts) a special panel of guest speakers will tell you, in practical, how-to terms about how they followed their dreams and developed them into viable businesses.

"Before I went to the workshop, I dreaded going to work."

What I really wanted to do was write and paint. About one year after the conference, I gave notice. The Work at What You Love Conference really gave me the confidence to first vision and then to craft my ideal job. Now, I put my kids on the school bus, spend my mornings writing, exercise, go to the painting studio for a couple of hours and am available for my kids when they come home from school... It's a great life.

BONUS DISCOUNT:
Bring a Fellow Dreamer and They'll Save $50

And that's not all. If you sign up not only yourself today but also your spouse, partner, or friend, we'll give that second person $50 off the registration fee.

That means that on or before the early bird registration dates of before March 15th, you save $50 and pay just $249. Your spouse, partner, or friend who signs up with you saves an additional $50 and pays just $199.  Split the difference and you both pay only $224. (After that date, that second person still saves $50 and pays just $249.)

"Life is good and my new jobless
job is so completely cool!"

I came to the seminar unhappy with my "job" and with an idea for a new business venture.  But I was terrified by the idea of building a "business" with employees, and a building, and a manufacturing site…and all that stuff that just seemed like more than I wanted to take on.

Sitting there listening to all of the stories of micro-business owners, who didn't have a "job" and didn't have what I had initially thought that a "business" would need to be, opened my eyes to what was possible.

I launched my company in September after two years of putting all of the pieces into place….Today I work from my home office, available for all of the things in my actual life that demand my presence. Life is good and my new jobless job is so completely cool!
