QUESTION: How do I market myself?

Question: How much money can I make?

Coaches typically charge anywhere between $100 and $250 for a 90 minute consultation. Coaches offering multi-session packages with coaching are charging upwards of $450.

If you plan to do workshops or Teleclasses, consider what you might charge and then how many you think you can realistic run in a year. As a ballpark, one coach made $200 doing a 2-hour seminar that was paid for by her local library. Others have charged on an individual basis anywhere from $30 per person on up. Of course that does not include workshop attendees who then decide to become private clients or sales of books, CDs, and other value-added materials from the back of the room.

To figure out how much you can earn, figure out how much you want to charge then multiply the number of clients you can and want to see each week.

I cannot speculate on what you will personally earn because it depends on, for example:

• How much time and effort are you willing and able to invest in building your business?

• How many clients would you like to see each week?

• How will you price yourself?

• What kind of information products or other services will you add in the future?

QUESTION: Is there financing available?

QUESTION: Is this course considered a tax-deductible business expense?

Of course you’ll want to check with a tax advisor, but if you live in the U.S.A. you should be able to deduct the entire cost of this course as a training expense – before you have earned your first dollar.

According to Internal Revenue Service you may deduct expenses as long as you make “a good faith effort to generate a profit.” If you are in the start-up phase of your business it may be helpful to review a section of the IRS website called “Is it a Business or Hobby?” In it, the IRS outlines the following criteria for determining whether an individual is carrying on an activity for profit. It says:

In determining whether you are carrying on an activity for profit, all the facts are taken into account. No one factor alone is decisive. Among the factors to consider are whether:

1. You carry on the activity in a business-like manner,

2. The time and effort you put into the activity indicate you intend to make it profitable,

3. You depend on income from the activity for your livelihood,

4. Your losses are due to circumstances beyond your control (or are normal in the start-up phase of your type of business),

5. You change your methods of operation in an attempt to improve profitability,

6. You, or your advisors, have the knowledge needed to carry on the activity as a successful business,

7. You were successful in making a profit in similar activities in the past,

8. The activity makes a profit in some years and the amount of profit it makes, and

9. You can expect to make a future profit from the appreciation of the assets used in the activity.

Other tax-deductible expenses include computers, web hosting, phone, business cards, magazine subscriptions… and so on. Plus, when you work from home, you can deduct a portion of your rent or mortgage, utilities, even certain home repair expenses.
