"What do you want to be when you grow up?" How many times did you hear that question when you were a kid?

Back then, it really didn't matter too much what you said... you could say you wanted to grow up to be a ballerina or a major league ball player or the "ice cream man" and ride around in an ice cream truck all day like my brother Mark.

At age 5 or 8 or 11, no one took these career leanings too seriously. That is until you got a bit older. At which point the idea that you were serious about being a ballerina or a ballplayer or the ice cream man was probably met with a lot of resistance from most of the adults in your life. People who told you to put away your silly ideas about being "happy" and just get a "good job."

So everyone from your guidance counselor to your mother swayed you toward being an accountant or an engineer or an executive. There's just one problem. You're miserable.

And sadly, you're not alone. As Benjamin Disraeli once said, "Most people will die with their music still in them."

But, what if the most "real" thing you can do is to do work that reflects your authentic self? To find a way to actually live your life on your own terms?

What if what you really need to do is to get "unreal."

After all, as Will Smith reminds us, "Being realistic is the most commonly traveled road to mediocrity." Is that what you really want?  

I mean you only have this one life. And how you live it is up to you.

Read that paragraph again. It’s powerful.

Now ask yourself how you feel each day as you get ready for work. It probably sounds something like this.

Your alarm clock buzzes you awake. You drag yourself out of bed, dreading another day at a job that’s high on stress and short on satisfaction.

I guess what I’m asking you is, are you doing work that is fulfilling and enjoyable? Because when you really love your work you greet the day like this:

You don’t need an alarm clock because you can’t wait to get out of bed and dive into another workday. If you need to take a break or go for a walk you don't need to "ask" for "permission" because you are the boss of YOU!

Maybe you think it’s too late. Maybe you believe that you’ve somehow missed your True Calling and that… well… you’re not getting any younger.

Nonsense. The 19^th century writer George Eliot got it right when she said, “You’re never too old to be what you might have been.”

Beverly Goodman Park from Northampton, Massachusetts is a perfect example of what I’m talking about:

Beverly was close to 60 when her marriage ended. At an age when most people are contemplating retirement, Beverly decided to pursue a long-held dream of becoming an attorney. A lot of people told her she was too old. Undaunted, Beverly went to law school while working full-time, passed the bar exam, and at 61, landed a job at a law firm, explaining, “I thought this age stuff was baloney.”

So as you see, just because you’re all grown up, that doesn’t mean you can’t change course to work at what you love.

In my coaching practice I work with people on a one-to-one basis. These are 90 minute laser brainstorming sessions. I call them "laser" sessions because I have a laser like focus on my client and how they can take one or more of the things they love to do and turn it into a income-generating small business.

But, over three days in March I'm going to once again bring a very small group of people together for the first ever Profiting from Your Passions Workshop and Retreat.

Give Your Dreams the Attention They Deserve

By some accounts, the typical working mother puts in an 84-hour week to meet her responsibilities at work and home. And other people's needs often come first. That's why I've designed this program to be both a workshop and a retreat.

Since this is the first time this kind of highly personalized, small group format is being offered, I'm looking at the fee as an "introductory rate."

If I decide to continue to do these intensive weekend retreats -- and right now that really is a big "if" -- I will probably raise the rate. After all, a friend of mine paid a resume and job placement firm over $3,000 to help her find her dream job. The resume was just so-so and with a lot of coaching from me, she found a job on her own thank you very much.

The way I see it, to have someone like me who can come up with creative profit center ideas in her sleep dedicate three days to helping you FINALLY figure out what you want to be when you grow up... and to include all the tools -- worth $297 alone -- and the planning and ongoing support, well, that's worth at least $3,000.

But like I said, I've only recently begun to offer this workshop in this format. Which means starting out I'm okay doing it at a lower rate.

I may live in the country but the Hartford/Springfield airport is just under an hour away and the Boston airport is about 90 minutes east. There are also numerous accommodations nearby at a range of prices.

Click on the travel and lodging link for a list of several fine bed & breakfasts and area hotels where you can stay. Many are within a 8-15 mile radius of my home including a modest but nice motel where you can get a room for around $70 a night.

Your breakfasts, lunches, and a gourmet dinner are all included.

When you arrive at my home you'll be greeted with a delicious continental breakfast of fruit, yogurt, and muffins/toast. If I'm feeling ambitious I may even whip up some oatmeal!

For lunch we'll caravan one mile to the funky and delicious The Lady Killigrew cafe located in a restored mill along side a roaring brook. This place is a haven for entrepreneurs. When you're there you'll understand that life really is too short not to be working however... and wherever you want!

Saturday night is when we all gather for a fabulous gourmet dinner. The exact venue will be determined based on proximity to where most participants are staying.
