After 25 Years, Parting Advice from the Dreamer in Residence at Changing Course

I’m writing to let you know that after a quarter of a century as the Dreamer in Residence at Changing Course, I’m stepping down.

If you read my recent post “Regret Nothing”, you’re probably not surprised.

I told you about some recent losses in my life and a family member battling cancer.

I talked about how times of loss or crisis remind us to take nothing for granted, most especially time.

About how now — more than ever — we need to ask ourselves, what would I most regret not doing?

It’s a question I asked myself in 1995. For me, the answer was crystal clear.

The thing I would most regret is never being my own boss.

What a Ride!

That journey began with the crazy idea to publish a newsletter for other burned out cubicle dwellers.

Over these 25 years, I’ve had experiences I could have never imagined possible.

I’ve gotten business advice from Sir Richard Branson and Gary Vaynerchuk.

I was invited to speak at a travel writer and photography class in Paris and at an International Living magazine conference in Panama.

Changing Course has been cited in dozens of newspapers and magazines in the US and Canada including The Wall Street JournalThe Boston Globe, The OregonianRedbook, Kiplinger’s, Self, Woman’s Day, and many more.

Entrepreneur’s Start Up magazine not only dedicated an entire page to my 10 Steps to Escape the Job World and Create the Life You Really Want they even sent a photographer to my house!

I helped hundreds of coaching clients connect the dots between what they love to do and how they can make money doing it.

Over 350 people from 19 countries took my course on how to get paid to brainstorm.

I led half a dozen Work at What You Love workshops around the country with Barbara Winter.

At the end of each, Barbara and I would turn to each other and say, “I think we helped change some lives today.”

Among them, Dyan DiNapoli who transformed herself into the Penguin Lady only to far surpass her wildest dreams.

And, as I noted in my recent tribute to the late Barbara Sher, I had the incredible experience of co-leading a four-day retreat in the Rocky Mountains with the very women who inspired my own dream, Barbara Winter and Barbara Sher.

I’m not telling you this to impress you.

I’m telling you this because far too many people only see the successful end result.

They don’t understand that every business big and small, started from nothing more than an idea.

Starting Out in 1995

One sure way to kill a dream is to wait until you’ve got everything 100 percent figured out before you begin.

For example, I began as the Making a Living Doing What You Love newsletter.

After two issues though, I realized that loving your work is nice – but it’s just the frosting on the cake.

The “cake” was being able to live life on your own terms.

So I came up with a new name, one that better spoke to people like me who were desperate to take the leap from having a boss to being their own boss.

I’d never published a newsletter, but I found a training program on cassette that gave me the basics. (I think I found them in a classified ad in Entrepreneur magazine.)

I bought some basic publishing software for my Mac and a designer friend at my old job did the initial layout.

A few years later I realized people might actually pay me for the informal advice-giving and resource sharing I’d already been doing with shuttle drivers, wait staff, and other disgruntled employees.

Mind you I had no formal training in either coaching or career counseling.

Which was fine because I had no interest in administering skills assessments or personality profiles or doing any of the other things traditional career advisers do to help people find their dream “job.”

I wanted to help people create their own job.

So one day I just hung out my shingle as an “outside the job box” career coach.

Over time other entrepreneurially-minded “idea people” told me they’d love to do what I do.

So I used lessons learned from my own experience to create the first and only training program to teach them how.

In the mid-90s getting on the “world wide web” meant knowing HTML.

I didn’t have a lot of money, but I did have a phone.

So I called a local community college to see if students in their HTML class needed a case study.

I got a free website and the two 40-something career changers who created it got to build their portfolio.

This was my first site.

Why Now?

For starters, when I launched the newsletter I was 40.

Last November I turned 65.

This is where you immediately go to the comments section to say, OMG, you don’t LOOK 65! 🙂

My mom died unexpectedly of a heart attack five months before her much awaited retirement. I’ve already outlived her by four years.

She left behind boxes full of material for quilts she’d never get to make and a lifetime of photos she’d planned to organize but never got the chance.

I know too many people who lived for their retirement day only to die just before or shortly after.

My Dad couldn’t wait to retire.

He liked to say he was going to spend the first few months sitting in a rocking chair.

Then after a few months, he was going to start rocking… very slowly.

I have no intention of sitting in a rocking chair.

In fact, I’m incredibly busy leading webinars and sketching out a new book.

And I’m looking forward to having more time to pursue other interests like actively addressing climate change and learning to do mosaics.

The other reason I’m stepping down is simple: It’s time.

Jon Stewart announced his retirement from The Daily Show by saying, “This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host.”

The fact is, I’ve been struggling with this decision for a while now.

Up until recently, I was juggling three investment properties. Happily, I’m down to one.

On top of that, I also have a thriving speaking business on something called impostor syndrome.

Learning that there was a name for the secret fear that others will discover we’re not really as intelligent, talented, or qualified as others “think” we are, was the impetus for my graduate research.

I’ve been leading workshops on the subject on and off since the 1980s.

Then in 2008, I got a six-figure book deal with Random House.

It took me two and a half years to write the book. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

When it finally came out in 2011 speaking invitations picked up.

In the last three years, they’ve exploded.

I’ve been to Portugal, Switzerland, England, and Denmark and spoken at organizations like Google, Microsoft, Dell, Blizzard Entertainment, Rakuten, Oxford University, NASA, the National Cancer Institute, and my personal favorite, Romance Writers of America.

The point is, all this obviously left a lot less time to focus on Changing Course.

And it wasn’t fair to anyone – most especially you.

What’s Next for Changing Course?

The other thing Jon Stewart said was, “In my heart I know it’s time for someone else to have this opportunity.”

It felt wrong to just hang out a “closed” sign. Especially now when more people than ever need help.

That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that the perfect duo stepped forward to take the strong foundation I’ve built and run with it.

Drum roll, please…

Meet the new Dreamers in Residence Arthurine Walker and Kate Fessler!

Kate and Arthurine will introduce themselves in more detail next time.

What I can tell you is that you’re in really good hands.

I met them when they took my Profiting from Your Passions coach training.

Even though they were both in the Class of 2007, since it was a teleclass, Kate and Arthurine didn’t meet until they teamed up to take over the reins at Changing Course.

It seems fitting that 13 years later the students would go on to take the teacher’s place.

For now, I’m not going anywhere.

The three of us are working together on an upcoming Work at What You Love Virtual Workshop. Stay tuned for details soon!

And I’ll definitely be involved in promoting and teaching the Profiting from Your Passions Career Coach Training Summer School.

Before I wrap up my final newsletter, I’d like to share some parting wisdom on what it really takes to change course.

Parting Advice #1 You Don’t Need Confidence — Really

If I’d waited until I felt ready… until I thought that I knew enough… until I felt confident – I’d still be in my cubicle.

In 1998 USA Weekend magazine article was dedicating an entire edition to the impact of the 1990 recession on families.

The editor asked if I could contribute some tips for two-income households looking to downsize to one income.

I knew nothing about it.

But I said yes anyway.

I mean, how hard could it be?

I called a financial planner for his advice and talked to a few couples who’d done it.

Add to that a dash of common sense and voila! I had my own sidebar of tips and free advertising for Changing Course to their millions of readers.

Fast forward to 2020 and every one of us has a PhD in Google.

You don’t need confidence to start a business because you don’t need to know everything.

You just need to be smart enough to figure it out.

Just say yes and learn as you go.

Parting Advice #2 It Really Is All Small Steps

Most dreams die because we give up too soon.

I know how easy it is to feel like you’re not making progress.

That’s why starting in 1996 I started documenting the things I’d accomplished each year.

It was my way of assuring myself, See Valerie, you are making progress.

Everyone wants to be in their dream life right now. But that’s not how it works.

Michelangelo didn’t sculpt David in a day. He literally chipped away at it bit by bit.

Take for instance this very announcement.

It took me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to write.

I didn’t edit it once; I edited it at least 20 times!

The thing is, you’re not “writing a book or a blog post or your website.”

You’re writing a sentence, then another one and another one.

You’re not “becoming a speaker.”

You’re outlining your talk (which trust me, you’ll then change hundreds of times).

You’re not “starting a landscaping business.”

You’re looking up local competition to see how you’ll do things differently, better, faster, higher-end, or more affordable.

Then you take another small step and another and another.

It may not sound glamorous, but it really is all small steps.

The important thing is to begin.

Parting Advice #3: Besides, It’s Not About You

One of my clients had spent years lovingly caring for an ailing parent.

After “Kim’s” mother passed she began to write a play about her experience.

Then she stopped.

Kim wasn’t afraid of failure she was afraid of success.

“What if my play is a hit,” she said, “then I’d have to play big.”

I invited her to imagine a sold-out theater full of people…

… to feel the excitement in the crowd…

…to know that among them were people who’d been through a similar experience and were eager for their own joy and pain to be honored by the words she’d scripted…

…to watch as the lights dimmed and the curtain rose to reveal an empty stage…

…and finally to picture herself, the almost playwright coming out to announce…

“I’m sorry, there will be no play tonight. I was too afraid of being great to write it.”

Can playing big be scary?

You bet.

It’s even harder if you’ve spent your life putting others’ needs before your own.

Even when you do manage to convince yourself that you are worthy, to suddenly move your own dream to the front burner can feel selfish.

All the more reason you need to see that everyone loses when you play small.

There are people out there right this very minute who want and deserve to benefit from your full range of knowledge, abilities, and skills.

So instead of the proverbial question, “What would you do if money were no object?” ask yourself, What sort of difference could I make if fear was not a factor?

Speaking of dreams…

You’re Invited to My Retirement Party!

Stay tuned for some sort of Valerie’s Retirement Party + Changing Course’s 25th Anniversary + Grand Re-Opening celebration.

With COVID-19 it’s not yet clear whether all or parts will be virtual. Or if it will be one party or separate celebrations.

No matter what, it won’t be until at least the fall.

For now, I’d love to hear from people who, via Changing Course, have been inspired to live the mission I established 25 years ago…

Live life on purpose
Work at what you love
Follow your own road

When did you start reading the Changing Course Newsletter – and why?

Was there a resource or an idea in the newsletter that sparked your own entrepreneurial journey?

Was there a particular book or audio that helped you?

Were you on one of the many teleclasses I ran with inspiring self-bossers like the maker of I Love Chicken Poop lip balm or the guy who started a successful online Bible study business or the woman whose craft instruction business was so successful her husband quit his job to join her?

Did we do a career coaching session together?

Did you attend one of the workshops…

Making Dreams Happen in Boulder, Colorado?

Work at What You Love in Northampton, Massachusetts; Madison, Wisconsin; or Ventura, California?

Dreams Can’t Wait in Kennebunkport, Maine?

Did you come all the way from Alaska or Sweden or Israel or Mexico or Montreal to participate in one of the small retreats I ran at my home in Montague?

Did you venture off to Ecuador for the Relax, Renew, Reinvent workshop?

I’d love to hear from you here!

(just scroll down to the comment section below)

And, please don’t worry if you don’t think you’ve done “enough.”

Or if you started and stopped or otherwise got stalled.

As Mary Ann Evans, writing under her pen name George Eliot, wrote, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

Heck, Gramma Moses didn’t start painting until into her 80s!

Finally, I’m deeply grateful to Lisa Tarrant for leaving her job-job 19 years ago to go on this crazy ride with me (and for being shorter than me :)) I couldn’t have grown Changing Course without her.

Thanks too, to Melinda Ashley for jumping into a whole new world of virtual assisting to lend us a hand!

Most of all, I want to thank all of you for honoring me with your attention all these years.

Knowing you trusted me with your dreams has meant the world to me.

Six figures in six months!

I could not be more excited!

My marketing mentor — and one of the smartest and nicest guys you’ll ever meet — Jeff Walker is about to put on his wildly popular Launch Masterclass… for FREE

Whether you already have a business… or you’re starting from scratch…

I am not exaggerating when I say that what you will learn in this Masterclass will be a complete game-changer.

I know because in 2006 I went from making a very modest living to earning six figures in six months.

It literally changed my life.

I’m hardly alone.

Since 2005, almost a million people have gone through Jeff’s launch workshops – and the success stories are legendary (some will blow you away).

And they aren’t all online businesses.

You could offer guitar lessons or provide tax services or teach dog obedience or coach people… and the launch strategy would still work.

In fact, some of the case studies Jeff shares are about people in such wide-ranging niches as…

  • a mental health non-profit
  • teaching yoga in Italy
  • grass-fed beef
  • painting
  • how to make corsets
  • teaching people how to get paid to brainstorm (wait — that’s me!)
  • and get this… even someone who did a 6-figure launch teaching people how to scream!

As important as how much these people earned is the unbelievable impact they were able to have on other people’s lives.

The best part about the upcoming Launch Masterclass for y-o-u is that it’s completely free.

Which is remarkable when you consider that Jeff is delivering 12+ hours of pure content LIVE (and he’s even answering questions LIVE).

It’s going to consist of four different classes, each building on the prior lesson – combined they make up a complete course (that’s why it’s a masterclass).

This “Launch Masterclass” is only going to be available for a few days.

Here’s the catch: because the entire training is being delivered LIVE… this is a time-limited opportunity.

There will be recordings available, but only for a limited time. So you need to go sign up and get registered now.

P.S. This first lesson covers the one launch strategy that’s generated over a billion dollars in results for Jeff’s students.

No wonder when Jeff talks, people like me listen – and learn. And if you truly want to thrive in self-employment, then you should too.

Register for the live broadcast here.

Notice to My Valued Readers: Since 1995 I’ve kept the Changing Course Newsletter ad-free. However, I do need to keep the lights on. So some pre-screened resources I review or promote may result in a referral fee. That said maintaining my 24+ year reputation means far more to me than making a few bucks promoting stuff I don’t believe in. Be assured that I only endorse products, people, or resources I know to be of value to my readers and never recommend anything I either have not or would not personally use myself.

Surprising Last Minute Deductions for Even “Wanna-Be” Self-Bossers

WARNING: Even if you’re just “thinking” about being your own boss, the following information may cause you to experience unexpected exhilaration, a soon to be persistent sense of freedom, and chronic joy.

On January 1st I’ll do what I always do. Set aside time to reflect on my goals for the coming year – health, relationships, spiritual, home, financial, and of course, business.

During the last days of December I’ll also do what I always do. Make sure to take full advantage of every available tax advantage of self-employment.

My friend and author of one of my all-time favorite books Making a Living Without a Job Barbara Winter said it best

“The American tax system is set up to benefit
the very wealthy and the self-employed.”

No surprise if you already have a business.

However if you have not started your business – no make that ESPECIALLY if you have not started a business – there are some important tax facts (and hence major tax savings) that may surprise you.

But you have to hurry!

SURPRISING TAX FACT #1: You can still take a tax deduction even if you haven’t yet made a profit

If you have not yet launched your business you may be surprised to learn that…

Even if you don’t earn anything from your new business until 2013, you can still write off legitimate business expenses incurred in 2012.

According to the United States Internal Revenue Service, as long as your efforts demonstrate an intention to earn a profit, you can begin deducting any money you invest in building your business right away. In their own words:

You do not need to actually make a profit to be in a trade or business as long as you have a profit motive.”

In fact, even if you don’t make a profit for three years, you can still deduct business expenses as long as you are making “ongoing efforts to further the interests of your business.”

Again from the IRS site:

The IRS presumes that an activity is carried on for profit if it makes a profit during at least three of the last five tax years, including the current year…

Save those receipts because deductible expenses include office supplies, phone, internet, advertising, books, postage, magazine subscriptions, bookkeeping services, member dues – just to name a few.

SURPRISING TAX FACT #2: Part-time businesses can take deductions too

Here’s what the IRS says about part-time businesses.

You do not have to carry on regular full-time business activities to be self-employed. Having a part-time business in addition to your regular job or business also may be self-employment.

And being the helpful people they are J the folks at the IRS even provide an example!

You are employed full time as an engineer at the local plant. You fix televisions and radios during the weekends. You have your own shop, equipment, and tools. You get your customers from advertising and word-of-mouth. You are self-employed as the owner of a part-time repair shop.

So that side business making wedding cakes, giving piano lessons, dog sitting, coaching others (sports, life, health, career), or plowing snow (which is what my engineer by day, plow guy by night does) – all qualify to take deductions.

SURPRISING TAX FACT #3: Wherever you are, as long as you’re working – it’s deductible

At Home

If you work from home, you can deduct a portion of your expenses.

So if your home has five rooms and your studio, office, or workshop is in one, generally speaking you can deduct one fifth (20 percent) of your rent or mortgage utilities, and home or tenants insurance.

Check with an accountant on repairs and improvements, but as I understand it… work done to your specific work space – for example, the cost of paint or wall treatments – is deductible.

The same is true for work done to your home as the whole. So unless you have an in-home food related business, you can’t deduct the cost of new cabinets.

But a portion of home repair expenses – a new roof, driveway, or septic system – or general upkeep like landscaping or snow plowing that involve your property as a whole would most likely qualify for a deduction.

On the Road

Let’s say you take a 7 day vacation to the Caribbean or Florida or London.

You take a day to call on local businesses to introduce them to your products or services, scout future seminar locales, do research for your book, interview people for your blog, or shoot an on-site video.

You can’t write off your entire vacation of course. But you can write off any expenses — lodging, meals, car, etc. — incurred for the time you spent doing business.

For seven summers my company (that would be me!) sent me off to a quiet, non-Internet connected lake house in New Hampshire for a one or two week writing retreat.

Since I wrote every day, I was able to deduct my mileage, cottage rental, and the groceries that kept me fat and happy as I worked out on the deck.

SURPRISING TAX FACT #4: Learning is tax deductible!

You may not yet know “how” to make money doing your own thing…

But did you know that your investment in LEARNING qualifies as a legitimate business expense?

After all, what could be more proof of your intention to be profitable then investing a portion of your start-up costs in the education and training required to succeed?

Training, Licensing, Certifications

Want to start a business around your love for cooking or wine? Check out the Culinary Institute of America’s Cooking Bootcamps. Start with the Wine Enthusiast Bootcamp this year and with some experience under your belt you’ll be better positioned to apply for a wine training scholarship

Want to work with injured or aging dogs? Register for Cindy Horsfall’s popular Aquatic Therapy training or join Hyun Park’s Englewood-based physical therapy center. But if you really want to go for it become a partner in her business!

Want to start a business entertaining children? Sign up for the 2013 class of the Red Skelton Clown School.

Basic Business Skills

Maybe you already work for yourself but need to hone certain skills. You can deduct these costs too.

Presentation skills: When I was in the corporate world I attended and then went on to deliver an outstanding 2-day course from an international company called Communispond.

Sales training: Sales expert and friend Carolyn Herfurth runs an excellent, results-oriented course for coaches, healers, and others who need to get more “yeses” but hate to “sell”

Writing your own web site marketing copy Even if you don’t talk to potential customers in person, you still need to get people to buy.  Another friend (and new first time dad!) Matthew Goldfarb has a great course that shows you how to create sales pages to turn your website into a cash machine.

Business Building Training

You can also deduct the full cost of home study programs that help you launch your business. Some of my favorites are:

Profiting From Your Passions®

Okay this part is blatant self-promotion. But it also makes another important point.

Over the years hundreds of people who naturally think outside the job box have trained with me to become a licensed Profiting from Your Passion® Career Coach.

The heart of the course is a proven coaching system to help clients connect the dots between the things they love to do and creative ways they could make money doing it.

But the course also covers things like what to do before, during, and after a laser brainstorming session, how to design a business that works for you, and selecting marketing strategies that play to your strengths and personality.

That makes the course both a training and business launch program.

Which, here again, if your intent is to earn more than the you spent to take the course – and hence a profit, then the tuition qualifies as a tax deductible expense.

If you like the idea of getting paid to brainstorm, there’s another incentive to act now. Register before the Early Bird deadline and you save $500. That means you can get started today for as little as $282.

The bigger point…

Whether it’s this or any course, the smartest move from a financial/tax perspective is always to pay in full because if you do it by December 31. you can write off the entire cost in 2012.

Obviously if you live in Uganda or Norway… or for that matter Utah or Nebraska… it’s more convenient and cost-effective to learn from the comfort of home. Hence, most of my own students opt to attend the online version of the career coach training.

You may be the kind of person who positively thrives on the energy and connection that can only happen at a live training. If that’s you, there’s another tax plus.

SURPRISING TAX FACT #5: Business-related travel is tax deductible

Whether you plan to join me in San Francisco this January, or travel anywhere for any business-related reason — your travel expenses are also a tax write off.

The travel deduction applies even if the event itself is free.

I’m thinking here of Entrepreneur magazine’s 2013 Growth Conference January 10th in Dallas. Thanks to event sponsor UPS, the entire event is FREE. And this year’s keynote is none other than Barbara Corcoran – author, entrepreneur, and star of the hit show Shark Tank.

Plan ahead so you’re ready to pitch your business to the editors (details at the conference page). The line is long, but it moves fast and you’ll meet really neat people!

Regardless of the event, if you want to take the deductions this year, make sure you book your airfare or pre-paid hotel reservations by December 31.

But don’t just think lengthy “business trips” here.

Local trips to the post office, bank, office supply store, or a local networking event – all qualify as business-related travel.

If you take public transportation, save your receipts; if you drive, track your miles. The IRS Standard Mileage Rate for 2013 its 56.5 cents.

That 3-times a week 10 mile round trip to the post office adds up to a whopping 1560 miles a year which equals a $881deduction. And that’s for one just errand.

Timing is Everything!

Barbara Winter turned me on to this cool tax fact:

Warren Buffet became self-employed in 1943 when at the age of 13 he delivered newspapers and sold his own horseracing tip sheet, claiming his bike as a $35 tax deduction.

What about you? Are you serious about being your own boss? If so, then take a moment now to list the classes, conferences, webinars, networking or other live events you know would help you get there.

Then DO IT NOW. I can’t stress enough:

As long as the course tuition and any related travel expenses are posted to your credit card by December 31, 2012 – even if the course itself is not until 2013 – you can write it off this year.

Again that applies even if you’re self-employed part time and even if you have not yet earned a profit.

It’s like getting free money people!

For more information on deductible expenses and other tax matters visit the Self-Employment/Small Business section of the IRS web site. My Canadian friends can check out

Tick Tock

If you want to be your own boss, you need to start thinking like a self-employed person now. This includes being aware of the multiple ways you can start benefiting from the American tax system this very day.

More importantly, if my mother passing away unexpectedly at just 61 taught me anything, it’s to not defer something as important as your dreams.

Time is ticking folks. Taxes aside – please don’t let this year end without taking at least one small step to get you closer to where you want to be in the New Year.

Make Money and Reach More People with Online Presentations

Not too long ago, Ryan Lee was struggling to support his young family as a physical education teacher in the Bronx. With his very first online product (with zero experience) he made close to $20,000.

Now, for the first time, he’s going to reveal exactly how he did it on an exclusive, LIVE webinar for Changing Course subscribers.

If you’ve been a subscriber for long, then you know I’m not what you’d call a “techie,” but when I saw how easily Ryan was able to automate his process, and the results he’s been able to accomplish, I got very excited.

The No-Travel “Work at What You Love” Virtual Weekend Workshop

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart.
Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”
Carl Jung

Since I began offering retreats in my home last year, I’ve heard from hundreds of people from all …

Dreams take Action.  Take action and save over $1300.

I know you want to work at what you love.

I am guessing that money is tight.

I know, too, that if you’re not a big traveler, then coming to a live event by yourself can feel daunting.

So, here’s what I’d like to do…

If you watched the heartfelt videos from people who’ve attended one of my previous “Work at What You Love” workshop & retreat…

The ones where one person after another… after another… looked you in the eye and told you point blank:

“If you really want to find a way to make a living doing what you love —
then you HAVE to find a way to come to this AMAZING retreat!”

If you read the true-life success stories of people like Gail, Serena, Judy, Ashley, and others who literally in a matter of MONTHS, have made incredible progress on their dreams — with several actually quitting their j-o-b-s…

And you’re STILL on the fence about attending the upcoming “Work at What You Love” Workshop & Retreat because of money or worries about traveling on your own…

I have some really good new!

I’ve come up with a way to help you realize your dream of working at what you love… have more fun doing it.. and SAVE OVER $1,300.

In few weeks, an intentionally very small group of people (no more than eight) will gather in my living room in the hills of western Massachusetts.

And I want you to be one of them.

The people who have already signed up know how vitally necessary it is to really slow down and tune into their dreams in a deeply intimate way.

But mostly they come seeking the answer to the essential question they — and YOU – have been asking forever…

“How can I do work that I love AND make money?”

Whether you want to totally replace your mind-numbing job. Or just find a creative way to bring in an extra three or four figures a month on the side…

Either way, like I said, I’d like to extend a unique opportunity for you and a friend to attend the November 12-14, 2010 workshop at an enormous savings.

Normally the 3-day workshop including materials, most meals, and a private, pre-workshop coaching session with me (which alone can run as high as $1200) — is $1497.

But when you sign up for the “Work at What You Love” workshop & retreat — you can bring…

…a friend
…your spouse or partner
…a buddy from work
…your mom
…your brother
…your cousin
…your postal carrier
…the server at Starbucks…

WHOEVER you want for only $197 extra.

If you both paid separately, the two workshop seats would cost just under $3,000. But when you sign up together, your companion can attend the retreat for only $197 more.

That’s an automatic total savings of $1,300!

Assuming you split the savings, you and your companion are attending the entire retreat for only $847 each.

When you consider that I charge close to that for a few hours of personal coaching, I think you’re agree this is a remarkable offer.

Plus, since you’re sharing hotel and other travel expenses, your total savings is actually much higher.

I hope this offer to save you over $1,300 — and give you an excuse to share your journey with a friend or loved one gets you off the fence and onto the road to right livelihood.

As Margaret Bourke White once wrote, “Action stops fear.”

Can You Really Fire Your Boss in 90 Days or Less?

Before I answer the question, “Can you really fire your boss in 90 days or less?” I need *you* to answer a question for me:

QUESTION: Do you work in a high stress job you don’t enjoy… or for a …

I know it and you know it…

I’ll cut to the chase…

You know and I know that you desperately want to do work that pays the bills AND feeds  your soul.

So, in theory, all I should have to do is remind you that the $500 off Early Bird Savings ends TODAY for the “Profiting From Your Passions” workshop & retreat.

But you and I also know that “wishing” is a whole lot easier than “doing.”

So Ask Yourself…

Exactly how many more years do you intend to waste…

…”wishing” you could change course to work at something that makes you really happy?

…”settling” for less satisfaction, balance, control, life?

….”waiting” until the time is right to finally go after your dream of being of your own boss?

It doesn’t need to be this way you know.

The Wait Is Over

For the 8 very determined people enrolled in the SOLD OUT February event, the wait is over.

In about 20 hours, change seekers from as far away as Alaska, California, Texas, and Missouri will descend on my home in rural Massachusetts.

I know they’re not really coming just to soak up the peaceful view from my living room window…  or the chance to sit around a blazing fire sharing their dreams with other like-minded souls… or the gathering in the evenings for fabulous gourmet meals…

They’re coming because they know that for 3 days they are going to get my undivided attention. I’m going to make sure they leave here on Sunday with…

*** a crystal clear vision of how they want their future lives to look…

*** concrete ways they can make money doing what they love…

*** a practical plan to make it happen

*** PLUS the all-important ongoing peer support they need to follow through

Tomorrow’s seminar is completely sold out. But that doesn’t mean you’ve lost your chance, yet…

The next one is happening March 26-28th and all the details can be found at:

3 Things You Need To Know

1) I am intentionally keeping these groups small so you and your dream get MAXIMUM time and attention. As I write this, there are only 5 spots left in the March session.

2) Holding these intimate, time-intensive workshops in my home is all a grand experiment. I am committed to doing the February and March sessions. In a few days I’ll know whether this is it or if I’ll do more. No promises either way.

3) The Early Bird $500 OFF SAVINGS ENDS TODAY. Since your meals are included, you can put that toward a very reasonably priced hotel about 9 miles from my house or your airfare.

Finally, this is what *I* know.

I have been helping people see ways to profit from their passion for 15 years. And I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that some amazing success stories are going to come out of this February group. Simply said, people’s lives will be changed forever.

There are lots of reasons not to be here in March. But when you stack these up against the chance to finally get to do the work you really love, there really is no excuse.

To your dreams,

Valerie Young
Dreamer in Residence

P.S. I would love to change YOUR life! The $500 Savings Ends TODAY

When you register for the March “Profiting From Your Passions” workshop & retreat you will get everything you need to discover what you love to do and then make money doing it. If the idea of loving what you do appeals to you, the way I see it… here are your options: You can keep plodding along week after week hoping that inspiration will somehow, someway suddenly strike and – in a flash – your true calling will be revealed.

Or, you can make a promise to yourself right here, right now to take the first bold step on behalf of your dreams. In other words, you make it your business to discover what it is you truly want to do.

If you chose the latter, then I’d like to help…

Personalized Help in An Intimate Setting

Normally I work with people on a one-to-one basis in 90 minute laser brainstorming sessions. I call them “laser” sessions because I have a laser-like focus on my client and how they can take one or more of the things they love to do and turn it into a income-generating small business.

But, over three days in February and March I’m bringing a very small group of people together for the first ever Profiting from Your Passions Workshop and Retreat.

One reason I am intentionally keeping the group small is so that you get to experience a personalized laser brainstorming session with me. This is where I take my 15 years of experience helping people from as far away as India and Ireland to profit from their passions and apply all that know-how directly to you and your specific gifts and interests.

You’ll come away with an attainable vision for your new life, a do-able plan for making your dreams happen, and the confidence you need to take the leap.
Whether you dream of starting your own import-export business… writing a best-selling novel… owning a dude ranch… working with kids… living in the south of France… whatever your passion… deep inside you know what you really love to do, the life you dream of having…

And this March 26-28, 2010 at the Profiting from Your Passion workshop and retreat in Montague, Massachusetts, you’ll learn how to harness that vision… and build a life around it that not only provides you a living… but feeds your spirit, too.

The Ideal Place to Start Simplifying and Slowing Down

As important as “what” will happen at this unique workshop and retreat, is “where” it will be happening.

Rather than sit in some windowless and utterly uninspiring hotel meeting room, you will explore your inner calling while you relax in my living room with a cup of tea, enjoy the view, and converse with a very small group of like-minded souls.

I’ll be hosting this event at my uniquely designed “Greek-style” home here in Montague, Massachusetts. Montague is at the foothills of the Berkshires in what’s known as the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Just 90 minutes from Boston and three hours from New York. And about an hour north of the Hartford, CT airport. There are several excellent B&Bs nearby and a moderately priced hotel all within 10 miles.

My Daily Walking Road

Though close to civilization (and some fabulous restaurants), it feels a world apart. I’m certain you’ll find it one of the most memorable places you’ll ever have the pleasure of enjoying.

The landscape exudes calm and quiet and can’t help but remind you of an era when the world was simpler…and life was slower.

It’s the ideal setting for a workshop and retreat meant to focus, in part, on just those things… simplifying, slowing down, balancing life…

Perch yourself where you have a view, and drink in the palpable sense of possibility.

Quite frankly, it would be impossible for you to gather on your own, in just a few short days, the wealth of knowledge, the excellent contacts, and the high-energy momentum for change that you’ll gain at this workshop and retreat. As I write this, three of the spots are gone, leaving only five left. If you’re ready to finally give your dreams the attention they deserve, please don’t miss this opportunity.

Andrew is the presenter of the popular WebTV show, “Help! My Business Sucks!” which you may have seen (if not, check it out at, it’s the #1 show on iTunes for entrepreneurs) and he’s developed an extraordinary system for creating, distributing, and promoting WebTV shows in any niche.

Discover how a WebTV show can help you:

  • Establish yourself as THE expert authority in your niche.
  • Get instant celebrity status.
  • Attract lucrative speaking engagements.
  • Make a lot of money!
  • Position you and your business as the FIRST professional, episodic WebTV show in your market.

Are You Going to Take Advantage of TODAY’S Gift?

I’ll be honest with you — I have a really full plate of stuff I really need to get to today — not the least of which is getting some final edits into my editor at Random House.

But I’m also smart enough to recognize a GIFT when I see one.

What I mean is — you and I both know what you desperately want…

You want to work at what you love…

You want to know the work you do matters…

You want to enjoy the control and freedom of being your own boss…

And of course you want the financial rewards that come when you learn how to profit from your passion…

You already have the desire. That’s not the problem.

The problem is time. Between the demands of your job-job, your home, your family, it’s hard to work on your dream.

I know because I used to be exactly where you are. Commuting 90 miles a day, coming home so fried all I could do was plop in front of the television.

I get it.

And that’s where my crazy idea and your gift comes in…

Millions of people are stuck at home because of today’s big snowstorm. Maybe you’re one of them. If so, that means you got something (besides snow) dumped in your lap — the gift of time.

Not only do you suddenly have this golden chunk of time to invest in figuring out how you’re going to actually create that new more satisfying, balanced life — I’m going to take you by the hand and SHOW YOU HOW.

I know it’s crazy because it’s so last minute. But I’ve decided to carve out time today to hold a very impromptu Teleclass for all of my reader’s at to help you advance your dream.

Please join me TODAY, February 10 at 4:00 PM EST for:

“10 Steps To Escape The Job World And Create The Life You REALLY Want”

You’ll discover the EXACT STEPS I took to transition from that insane commute to my high stress corporate job to doing work — and having a life — I truly love.

I’m talking about a life where you get to do what you want… how you want… when you want.

It’s insane enough that I’m putting on a Teleclass that starts in just a few hours from now.

But that’s not the only insane part. Next to “time”, the second biggest excuse I hear for not pursuing a dream is money.
Well be prepared to be officially “excuse-less.”

Because today’s Teleclass is only TEN BUCKS. At $10 this course is itself a gift.

There’s no time to waste. I can only accommodate 250 people.

If you want to be on the LIVE call register now. That way you can start applying the steps the minute the call ends.

Don’t worry if you miss the call. When you register, you’ll automatically receive the audio recording within 24 hours so you can listen at your convenience.

Go here to register now:

To your dreams,

Valerie Young
Dreamer in Residence

P.S. A dream is a terrible thing to waste. Please don’t miss this chance to discover 10 practical, doable steps you need to take to go from having a boss to being your own boss.

Your first step to freedom starts at 4:00 EST TODAY FOR ONLY $10. Frankly you’d be insane not to take advantage of these twin gifts of time and money.

Here’s the registration link again:

Turning Passions Into Profits

When the October issue of More magazine arrived, I tossed it into the pile with the other mail. I didn’t remember subscribing to More. But then it wouldn’t be the first time I ordered something and then forgot I did it. Turns out I had forgotten more than I realized.

Two days later I got a call from a producer named Noreen from WPIX Channel 11 in New York City. She was calling about my interview on career re-invention in the latest issue of – you guessed it – More magazine!

In my defense the More interview happened months ago. I’d given several other interviews since then and with writing a book and everything, it just slipped my mind. Anyway, Noreen loved the article and wondered if I could come to New York to do an on-camera interview.

I’m not telling you this to impress you. I’m telling you this because over the course of the next few days I re-learned some valuable lessons about turning passions into profits that can benefit you as well.

Pay Attention to What Excites You

You would think being interviewed by a major New York television station would be exciting enough. But really the highlight of my 3-day romp around Manhattan (besides seeing the fabulous Broadway show Wicked) was the opportunity to sit down with mega-entrepreneur and social media phenomenon Gary Vaynerchuk at his enormous offices in the Village.

Here I am with Gary Vaynerchuk in his office

Talk about turning a passion into profit! While working at his immigrant parent’s New Jersey liquor store, he realized that the average person not only didn’t know a lot about wine. And because of the snob factor, most were too intimidated to ask.

So he set up a small video camera at his kitchen counter and started taping himself talking to the average Joe and Jane about wine. And with that Wine Library TV was born!

If you haven’t seen Gary teaching people about wine, you’re missing out. All too often people think the only way they can be successful is to some somehow turn themselves into someone they’re not. Not true.

Just by being himself – in fact because he was being himself – Gary’s viewership swelled to over 80,000 a day, and his family’s wine business grew from $5 million a year to over $60 million. Since then he’s made television appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Ellen DeGeneres, NBC’s Today Show, and elsewhere and has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today… the list goes on and on.

There was a time when starting a business meant you had to have a big marketing budget. But gone are the days when you have to spend $50,000 on an ad in the New York Times or have a commercial during the Super Bowl to get noticed.

Gary’s latest passion is letting everyone who wants to profit from their passion know that money is no longer a barrier. I’ll let Gary tell you himself…

Gary is about to release a new book called Crush It: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In On Your Passion. It goes on sale starting Tuesday, October 13th but you should reserve your copy now. In a minute I’ll tell you how you can get a free copy.

Pay Attention to What Excites Other People

If you see other people getting excited about something, it often signals an opportunity. When I was in New York, the winners of the annual Vendy Award were being announced. It’s an award that goes out to the best street food vendors in the city.

The fact that New Yorkers are excited about being able to buy gourmet waffles or falafels from the side of a truck, or that the one-year-old Big Gay Ice Cream truck which sports toppings like toasted curried coconut or wasabi pea dust, was among the Vendy Awards finalists, tells you that people in your community would probably be excited to have a way to get that same kind of fast but good food in your area. (Okay so maybe the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck might be somewhat less popular among some members of some communities, but you get my point.)

Similarly, you’d expect an entrepreneur like Gary Vaynerchuk to be passionate about turning passions into profits. What I didn’t expect was the enthusiastic response from the people at WPIX. It was really just a five minute interview of me sharing many of the same tips I’m sharing here with you and about the importance of dwelling in the world of possibilities.

But when the interview ended, Noreen and Bart the videographer were positively breathless. “That was so inspiring!” said Bart “We never get to talk to people like you!” Then Noreen said, “Have you ever thought about having your own TV show?”

As flattering as it was, honestly, I was more struck by their excitement than by any future fame. Noreen talked about how hungry people are for this kind of information. I’ve already begun to think about how a "Passions Into Profits" make-over show might work! Even if it doesn’t happen, it’s exciting to know that more and more mainstream people are open to the idea of being their own boss.

Hang Out With People Who Are Already Profiting From Their Passions

The whole reason I was going to Manhattan in the first place (besides meeting with my editor at Crown Publishing) was because my friend Carrie Wilkerson AKA The Barefoot Executive asked me to film a segment for her new online TV show.

Carrie Wilkerson the Barefoot Executive and me before our shoot.

Carrie also invited a soon-to-be-new friend and kindred spirit, marketing guru Suzanne Evans.

Suzanne, Carrie and me at the studio

Perry Lawrence, Ask Mr. Video

Someone else along for the excellent adventure was my friend Perry Lawrence from I got to know Perry when we were both in Aspen on a Maverick Business Adventure trip. To say that Perry is a “nice guy” is truly an understatement. He’s also passionate about helping people create their own online television series, something else we’ll talk more about in the coming weeks.

Take Action

Loving something alone is not enough to turn it into a business. You have to DO something with your passion. If the path is not clear, here are some ways to get started:

Apprentice: Find someone already doing what you want to do and see if you can study under them. You’ll need to work for free or pay for the individual attention or both. Still, there’s no better way to get hands-on training than to learn from a master.

Volunteer: If you want to work in radio, volunteer at a radio station. If you want to stage events, volunteer to help someone stage their event. If you want to start an organic farm, put in some time at an organic farm. An hour a week or one weekend a month can add up to give you valuable experience and contacts.

Take a Course: Most communities have continuing education programs through a community college or the state university system. For example, I recently signed up for a course through my local community college on how to be a talk show host. I could have just as easily registered for cheese making, transforming trash into art, or import export – and come next spring, I just may!

When I take courses like this it’s not so much about me wanting to be a talk show host or make cheese or import things. For me it’s about fueling my mind so I can pass that information along to you and to the people who have taken my Outside the Job Box Career Coach Training program so they, in turn, can share it with their clients.

Pay Attention to Coincidences

Check this out…

  • I “just happened” to have been interviewed by More magazine. And Noreen, the WPIX producer, “just happened” to see it and think it would make a cool story…

  • I “just happened” to be on my way to New York when Noreen asked if I’d come to their New York studio for an interview…

  • I “just happened” to register for a $39 course on how to be talk show host a week before Noreen suggested I have my own show…

  • Carrie “just happened” to hear about me because she heard me speak on a recording that was made at an Ali Brown event…

  • Carrie “just happened” to set up that amazing meeting with Gary Vaynerchuk…

  • Carrie also “jut happened” to invite Suzanne Evans who I am now partnering with to help more aspiring entrepreneurs who hate to market….

Most importantly, I believe that none of this is coincidence. I believe successful people make their own luck. We reach out, we show up, we act – even when we don’t yet feel fully confident – and we put in the effort.

Are you still in search of your passion? Or do you wonder how to turn your passion into money? Trust me, there are “forces” that are trying to communicate with you every day. It could be a bumper sticker on that pokey car you got stuck behind, a random conversation with someone at the hardware store, someone you saw on television, or indeed this very newsletter.

So often you really do know what you need to do. You just need to pay attention to the voices guiding you and allow yourself to go there.

Get Paid to Help Others Turn Their Passions Into Profits

What I’m passionate about is helping people change course to work at what they love. I also love teaching people how to do what comes naturally to me.

Even though I have not met many of them in person, I consider the previous graduates of my Outside the Job Box Career Coach training program to be a part of “my tribe.” It’s hard to meet everyone. Some live as far away as Singapore, Kenya, Norway, Australia, the UK, Barbados, Canada, and even Kazakhstan!

Others I have met only over the phone or through the special “Connect & Collaborate” networking site we set up just for the consultants to meet, share, and support one another. (Like the two California coaches who recently discovered they live in the same town and met for lunch to brainstorm ways they might work together. How cool is that?)

Some of the people who’ve completed the training are taking private clients. Some are doing group coachings. Some are running workshops. Some are writing articles, running blogs, writing books, and creating information products. Some are still in the process of creating their web sites or devising their marketing strategies.

There is one thing that everyone who has gone through the Outside the Job Box Career Coach course shares in common. And that’s a strong passion for helping people see how they too can profit from their passion. In fact, I’m very seriously thinking of renaming the entire program the "Profit from Your Passions Coach Training Program"!

Is This Your Passion?

To date over 75 people have signed up for the Self-Paced version of this one-of-a-kind training program bringing the total number of trainees including those who have attended the Teleclass version and my live program to over 125 people worldwide!

I’m particular proud of the Self-Paced program. That’s the system I developed to allow people anywhere, regardless of time zone or circumstance, to learn how to be an Outside the Job Box Career Coach.

When we met up with some of these people last spring, Lisa asked them to share their thoughts with you. It’s energizing to see people so passionate about their work and about the opportunities the future holds…

Registration Starts Next Week

Starting next week, I’ll once again open registration to another very limited number of trainees. In the meantime, I’m working on some very cool bonuses including even more tools to help you start earning money, faster.

For starters, the first 35 people to register will get a free copy of Gary Vaynerchuk’s new book Crush It: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In On Your Passion. Plus I have another video Gary did to share with you. As you can see it was a total video fest!

I’ve also got some very cool brainstorming calls coming up just for the people on the Priority List. Being on the Priority List guarantees you’ll also have a head start on registering before I open the course up to all 40,000 people on my list.

If your passion is teaching, coaching, writing about or otherwise helping others turn their passions into profits then make sure you get your name on the list!

Go there now:

As Lou Stoops wrote, “It has been estimated that well over ninety percent of the things people worry about never happen! What a waste to spend time pondering ‘what ifs’ when we could be pursuing ‘what might be!’”

A passion is a terrible thing to waste. Find yours, then imagine what might be if you really got serious about profiting from your passion!

A Little Knowledge Can Go a Long Way

How to Generate a Steady Cash Flow
Using What You Already Know

Valerie and her rescue dog,
"Cokie Roberts"

By Valerie Young

“The number one money challenge for people who want to transition from a salaried job to being an entrepreneur is the unpredictability of their earnings.”

There are lots of different ways to “package” and sell what you know teaching classes, writing a how-to manual, and so on. But there is another lesser-known way to turn your interests into income. And, it’s the only way I know that is actually designed to generate a steady and relatively predictable flow of income on a monthly basis.

If You Want a Predictable Stream of Income, Create a “Continuity” Program

From the book of the month club to the Netflix DVD rental model, member clubs (often referred to as “continuity” or “subscription” programs) have always been popular with consumers. It’s easy to see the appeal. Members like the idea that for a flat monthly fee they’re guaranteed exclusive access to a continuous flow of information, resources, entertainment, support, or products of interest.

The huge appeal to entrepreneurs is that membership programs provide a CONTINUOUS and relatively predictable flow of income. Take Consumer Reports magazine as an example. Instead of charging the full subscription price upfront, they will automatically bill the subscriber’s credit card in monthly installments of $4.95. Ongoing “membership” allows the subscriber to access password-protected areas of the website at any time.

You do the math. Even if you manage to attract only 1,000 members – at $4.95 a month that’s $4,950 in income a MONTH. Some continuity programs charge as much as several hundred dollars a month.

You don’t have to be a big company to start your own member program. Successful member programs can be found in such diverse niches as embroidery, jazz guitar... even sky diving!

Anyone Can Start a Member Program

Not too long ago Ryan Lee was struggling to support his young family as a physical education teacher in the Bronx. Ryan still loves the world of fitness. But today he runs 48 different membership sites all in the health, fitness, and sports training field.

Here’s where it gets interesting…

You don’t even need to have personal knowledge or experience in a subject area to start a member program. It may surprise you to learn that the guy who founded
has a background in fitness – but he himself is NOT a massage therapist. Instead, he relies on a team of “faculty” with expertise in growing a massage practice to create value-added content for his members.

Turn Your Interests into Income

As you’ve just seen, setting up a membership site can be as simple as figuring out what your audience needs and then finding the people who can provide it. But let’s take a hypothetical example of an untapped market.

Let’s say you love fresh lavender. Hop on the internet and you’ll find there are literally hundreds of viable farms and lavender related businesses all over the world – many in the U.S. and Canada.

Now what if one of these growers wanted to join the American, Canadian, or North American Lavender Growers Association? They could join the Australian Lavender Industry Association for $125 a year ($155 international) or the New Zealand Lavender Growers Association. It may be out there but I could not find a North American counterpart.

Do you hear what I hear? It’s the sound of opportunity knocking!

Think about it… even if you sign up a mere 200 lavender farm owners and charge them a modest $35 in monthly member fees. You’d be bringing in $7,000 a MONTH!

Don’t Know Where to Begin? Figure It Out!

I’ve been in this business long enough to know that you’re probably muttering, “But how am I supposed to start a member program for lavender farmers if I don’t know anything about out it?”

The answer comes down to three little words that every aspiring entrepreneur should memorize: Figure It Out!

Instead of trying to guess what your prospective members want, go to the source and ask them! Do lavender growers need help marketing their products? Making operations more efficient? Finding seasonal workers? Breaking into new markets? Understanding new and existing government regulations? Creating joint ventures like advertising campaigns or events with other growers? Learning about new state or provincial programs to support agri-tourism?

In my very limited search, I learned that as part of the planning phase prospective growers often travel to France for a first-hand look at the lavender industry in Provence. And yet, I could not find a single person running lavender farm tours to France. Now imagine if your member program sponsored tours to France and you got to go! How fun is that!

Once you understand your market’s needs, all you need to do is find authors, successful farmers, agricultural marketing experts, botanists, organic food store owners and others who you can interview or who you can get to write articles. You could set up Teleclasses, put on regional or national conferences, and otherwise seek out other resources that your members want. Like I always say, you may not know everything there is to know about a subject but you’re always smart enough to figure out who does!

As long as you make good on your promise to consistently deliver quality content, as a member program owner, you’ll receive a steady flow of revenue in the form of member fees.

Where Do You Begin?

Fortunately, when it comes to knowing exactly what it takes to set up and run a successful membership site, you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Remember Ryan Lee – the former P.E. teacher turned millionaire fitness membership site owner? Well, last year Ryan teamed up with a really terrific guy named Tim Kerber. Tim is the co-creator of a turn-key membership software solution called MemberGate. Together they started (are you ready…) a membership site for membership site owners.
was created to help new and seasoned membership site owners to continue to grow and learn.

Next, Tim and Ryan teamed up to conduct a program to teach people how to start and run their own membership programs. Not surprisingly, the program sold out in a week.

Tim emailed me this week to tell me that he and Ryan are going to once again open up their Membership Site Bootcamp to new members.

To help people decide whether running a membership site is right for you they’ve put together a short video to show you:

§        How membership sites work

§        What makes membership sites the ultimate portable business (as long as you have a laptop and an internet connection you can run your business from anywhere)

§        The income potential including how recurring income increases the value of the business for future resale

You also get to see some pretty amazing case studies of actual people who, in literally a matter of months, are generating a steady monthly income stream from their new membership sites. I happen to know a few of these people behind these success stories personally, so I can assure you they are very real.

If the thought of generating thousands to possibly tens of thousand of dollars a month in steady, recurring income appeals to you I encourage you to watch the video at

“The Way to Get Unstuck is to Get Informed”

My guess is the first thing you feel when you hear about the income-generating potential of membership sites is excitement. After all, with a steady income you really CAN quit your job!

After the excitement though comes fear. Am I right?

If that sounds like you, then repeat after me: "I don't have enough information right now to be afraid OR excited."

When it comes to changing course, information really will set you free, because the greater your knowledge, the greater your options and the less risky change becomes.

As you watch the video, I’d like you to do two things. One, jot down any questions and/or ideas you have about member programs. Two, pay attention to any inner dialogue that is self-enabling or self-defeating. Then fill in these blanks…

  • The biggest question I have about starting and running a member program is….

  • The first idea that springs to mind is….

  • I know I can do this because…

  • The reason I know I could never do this is…

To learn more about how to start a member site and how to make it profitable, watch this short video now and be sure to sign up for the follow up case studies:

Whether your passion is salsa, gardening, art, or wrestling, there are a myriad of ways to turn what you already know into your livelihood. If you are drawn to the idea of a more regular, predictable income stream that has the potential to be extremely profitable, then running your own member site may be something worth exploring.

Dale Carnegie once said, “We all have possibilities we don’t know about. We can do things we don’t even dream we can do.” “

Whenever you find yourself thinking that your dream is not possible, find someone who is successfully doing the thing you want to do and follow them. I guarantee that this road will lead you to a lifetime of satisfaction, well-being, and even greater possibilities than you could ever imagine.

P.S. Get Rich Slow

When you watch the video you’ll see some revenue figures from actual member sites that range from $4,500 to a whopping $193,000. Again, because it’s a continuity program, these figures are per MONTH.

These numbers are impressive.

Yet, if you’ve been following Changing Course for any time now, then you know that I do not advocate anything that even remotely smacks of “get-rich-quick.” Starting a member site, or any reputable on- or off-line business, takes time and effort. And a member program certainly offers no fast, easy road to riches. But I figure if you’re going to work hard to grow someone else’s business, you might as well work hard to build your own.

I would not suggest you go into the membership site business necessarily expecting to be a millionaire like Ryan. And certainly not right away.

But I do believe that if you are willing to put in the time and effort, that it is entirely possible that by this time next year you could be earning enough from your member site to quit your job or at the very least go part-time.

The key is to begin. Here is the link again:
